Our Club

Hull Zanshin Karate Club trains in a style of Karate known as Wado-Ryu. This style of Karate is one of the four main styles recognised by the World Karate Federation. Many more styles exist, but the competition rules of the WKF, recognise the four styles of Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu and Wado Ryu.

Our club is a member of Wado UK, the (Independent Wado Ryu Karate-Do Association United Kingdom). In turn we belong to the English Karate Federation and subsequently the European and World Karate Federations.

Our instructor is Tony Dent a student of John Moreton the president of the Wado UK and EKF board member. Tony has trained with John Moreton for 36 years as of 2010 and continues to assist in matters relating to the Wado UK group.

We are also fortunate to benefit from other Wado UK instructors, who teach and train at the club. Barry Meanwell who has competed to a high level for many years for Wado UK and Paul Braid who is a Kumite coach within the group and Instructor of the ShinKen Dojo.

Aims and Activities

Our aim is to practice and preserve, the Japanese art of Wado Ryu Karate. Our training times and venue can be found at the foot of this page, but please read on to get a feel for what we have to offer.

We regularly take part in competitions for all ages and genders. Some of these competitions are local, but most take us on our travels around the country. Our club has its own competitors, but we travel in the main with our fellow Wado UK clubs. This helps with coaching duties on the day and helps strengthen the bond between our association students.

As well as competitions, we also train at courses around the country. Some of these courses relate specifically to Karate itself and some of them relate to other activities. These activities include National coaching qualifications. Qualifications for coaching at competitions and also for officiating at competitions.

Whatever your reasons for training in Karate, we think our club, association with Wado UK and membership of the English Karate Federation will offer you what you need.

Opportunities

Through our membership of the Wado UK,we have the structure in place for anyone wishing to become qualified in other areas. We are able to offer qualifications for coaches at club level and also for competition coaching.

With regard to competition, we can also set people on the road to official’s qualifications. Beginning with marshaling experience through table officiating and on to judging and refereeing. These qualifications would be supported by our Wado UK association and could then be attempted at Governing body level for national competitions.

Training Details

We like to think of ourselves as approachable and are always happy to answer any questions people may have. If there is anything you think we might be able to explain better in person, just pop along to the club and have a chat with us.

Our training times as of the 7th September 2010 are Tuesdays and Thursdays 6.00pm-7.30pm. The price tariff is intended to be sympathetic to peoples budgets, hence the family discounts and multiple night training discounts. We do however need to support our commitment to hiring the sports centre for the 3 hours per week.

Training sessions start at £3, with the details below explaining more fully any discounts.

1 Family Member  = £3 per session or £5 per week when paid on a Tuesday

2 Family Members = £5 per session or £10 per week when paid on a Tuesday

3 Family Members = £7 per session or £15 per week when paid on a Tuesday

4 Family Members = £8 per session or £18 per week when paid on a Tuesday

We also have the opportunity to train at other Wado UK clubs in the area and we would recommend that if at all possible people take this opportunity. Times and locations of these clubs can be obtained from us at this club, or by visiting the links page and checking out Wado UK member clubs own website's.
